Can Foot Problems Affect Your Balance?

Yes. Foot problems can affect your balance by changing the way you stand, walk, and respond to uneven surfaces. In recognition of Falls Prevention Awareness this month, Syracuse Podiatry is highlighting an often-overlooked part of fall prevention: healthy feet and ankles. Pain, numbness, weakness, and poor support can make it harder to feel steady.

How Do Your Feet Help You Stay Balanced?

Your feet provide a stable base for movement. When something interferes with that process, your balance may suffer.

Peripheral neuropathy can cause numbness, tingling, or reduced sensation in the feet. If you cannot fully feel the floor, a curb, or a change in terrain, it may be harder to adjust your steps. Learn more about neuropathy and foot health.

Foot pain can also change your gait. Conditions such as arthritis, plantar fasciitis, bunions, and heel pain may cause you to favor one foot, shorten your stride, or shift your weight. Syracuse Podiatry’s patient education library offers more information about common foot and ankle conditions.

What Foot Problems Can Increase Fall Risk?

Several factors may make walking less stable, including:

  • Weak or unstable ankles
  • Reduced sensation in the feet
  • Pain that changes your walking pattern
  • Foot deformities that affect shoe fit
  • Poorly fitting or unsupportive footwear
  • Limited flexibility or joint stiffness

Shoes matter, too. Footwear should fit securely, provide support, and have soles with good traction. Shoes that are worn out, too loose, or difficult to walk in may add another challenge when balance is compromised.

For some patients, custom orthotics may improve alignment, support, and movement. Treatment depends on the cause of instability, so proper evaluation is important.

Do Not Ignore Changes in Your Balance

Feeling unsteady is not something you should automatically accept as part of getting older. If you have foot pain, numbness, ankle weakness, or changes in the way you walk, a podiatrist can help identify contributing factors.

Syracuse Podiatry has previously outlined foot conditions linked to fall risk. This Falls Prevention Awareness season, consider whether your feet could be affecting your stability and address problems before they interfere with your mobility.

Our podiatrists, Dr. Ryan L. D’Amico, Dr. Donal M. Erickson, Dr. Keith Sherman, and Dr. Colin Kalabanka, can evaluate foot-related issues and provide guidance and support. Contact us today so we can help your feet feel their best.
