Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, marking the unofficial start of summer and the beginning of beach trips, vacations, road trips, and outdoor adventures.
While summer activities are exciting, they can also take a toll on your feet if you are not careful. At the end of the day, healthy feet can help make your vacation far more enjoyable. Here at Syracuse Podiatry, we want patients to enjoy summer while protecting their foot and ankle health.
Wear Supportive Sandals
Flip-flops may seem like the perfect summer shoe, but many offer little to no arch support. Walking long distances in unsupportive footwear can contribute to heel pain, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and foot fatigue. When you’re out and about this summer, choose sandals with cushioning and proper support.
Protect Your Feet Around Pools and Public Areas
Summer also brings increased exposure to bacteria and fungi in locker rooms, hotel pools, and public showers. Athlete’s foot, plantar warts, and toenail fungus are common during this time of year.
To lower your risk:
- Wear sandals or water shoes in public wet areas
- Keep feet clean and dry
- Change out of damp socks quickly
- Avoid sharing towels or shoes
Preventing Blisters During Travel
Lots of walking during travel can quickly lead to painful blisters. Before a trip, make sure your shoes are properly broken in and fit comfortably. Moisture-wicking socks can also help reduce friction.
If you notice redness, irritation, or a blister forming, address it early before it becomes more painful or infected.
Do Not Ignore Foot Pain
Many people try to “push through” foot pain during vacations or summer activities. However, persistent pain is often a sign that something is wrong. Heel pain, swelling, ankle instability, or sharp pain while walking should not be ignored.
Keep Your Feet Healthy All Summer Long
Whether you are traveling, enjoying local outdoor events, or simply spending more time on your feet this season, proper foot care matters. Taking a few preventative steps now can help you stay active and comfortable throughout the summer months.
