X-rays: we’ve all gotten them before, whether for an injury or our teeth at the dentist’s office. But what about getting one for your foot or ankle? Stepping into a podiatrist’s office with foot pain, you might find yourself getting a foot X-ray. And, due to the popularity of this widely used diagnostic tool, you may have some preconceived misunderstandings about its efficacy, safety, or necessity. In this blog, we at Syracuse Podiatry are here to clear things up.
Myth: An X-ray is Always Necessary for Foot Pain
A podiatrist won’t automatically send you for an X-ray just because your foot hurts. That’s because X-rays are specifically for viewing bone-related issues. So, if your pain is clearly coming from a soft tissue problem, like a very obvious bruise or a simple blister, an X-ray might not be necessary.
But with that being said, a podiatrist’s clinical exam is our first and most important test. We use it to determine if there’s a need to look at anything beneath the surface.
Myth: My X-ray Didn’t Show Anything, So My Pain Isn’t Real
This is a common and frustrating misconception. X-rays are designed to show bone density and structure, but they are blind to soft tissues. The pain you feel from a sprain, tendonitis, or a nerve issue won’t show up on a standard X-ray, but it is absolutely real.
An X-ray in these cases is still useful because it helps to rule out a fracture or other bone problems, which is a crucial step in pinpointing the correct diagnosis.
Myth: X-rays are Only for Acute Injuries
X-rays are used for more than broken bones. We actually use them to assess the severity of arthritis by looking at the narrowing of joint spaces and the formation of bone spurs, or for foot deformities like bunions or flat feet.
For these conditions, a weight-bearing X-ray can show how the bones are positioned under the weight of your body and provide a blueprint for treatment.
Myth: The Radiation from a Foot X-ray is Dangerous
Many people worry about radiation exposure, but modern X-ray technology uses very low doses. In fact, it’s similar to the amount you’re exposed to in a few hours from the natural environment. The benefit of a proper diagnosis far outweighs the risk.
Myth: All Podiatry Offices Have X-ray Machines
While many podiatry offices are equipped with on-site X-ray machines, it’s not a universal guarantee (we do).
Having an in-office machine is a major convenience for patients it allows us to immediately diagnose you. And the faster we do that, the faster we can start your treatment plan!
