Why Does My Ankle Keep Giving Out?

An ankle that repeatedly gives out can make walking, exercising, or using stairs feel unpredictable. This recurring sensation may be a sign of chronic ankle instability, particularly if you have previously sprained the ankle. Below, the podiatrists at Syracuse Podiatry explain why ankle instability develops and how treatment may help restore strength and confidence.

What Is Chronic Ankle Instability?

Chronic ankle instability causes the outer side of the ankle to give way repeatedly. It may happen during sports or other physical activity, but some people experience it while walking on level ground or standing.

Other possible symptoms include:

  • Recurring ankle sprains
  • Pain, tenderness, or swelling
  • A wobbly or unstable feeling
  • Difficulty balancing on the affected foot
  • Weakness during walking or exercise

The problem often begins after one or more ankle sprains. When the ligaments are stretched or torn, they may not fully regain their previous strength.

Why Does an Old Ankle Sprain Still Matter?

After the initial pain and swelling improve, it can be tempting to resume normal activities without completing rehabilitation. However, an ankle may feel better before its strength, balance, and range of motion have fully returned.

The muscles around the ankle can also become weak, while the body’s ability to recognize the joint’s position may be reduced. This can make it easier for the ankle to roll again, creating a cycle of repeated sprains.

Can Poor Balance Make the Ankle Give Out?

Balance depends partly on communication between your joints, muscles, and nervous system. An ankle injury can disrupt this process. Uneven ground, quick changes in direction, or an unexpected step may then cause the joint to buckle.

Balance exercises and targeted strengthening may retrain the muscles around the ankle and improve control. Depending on the severity, treatment may also include bracing, activity modifications, or other support.

When Should You See a Podiatrist?

Schedule an evaluation if your ankle repeatedly gives out, rolls easily, remains swollen, or causes pain during daily activities. A podiatrist can assess the situation and determine whether imaging is needed.
