Get Your Feet Ready for Summer with These 3 Tips

Summer is just around the corner, and soon the warm weather will be calling people out of their homes to get outside and enjoy all those summer activities we love. It can put a lot of stress on your feet. To make sure you get the most fun out of the season, try these 3 summer foot care tips.

  1. KEEP YOUR FEET CLEAN!
Good foot hygiene is critical to preventing fungal, viral, and bacterial infections. For most healthy people, routine foot cleaning can happen when you take your daily shower. Seniors may have their own special needs. Many older adults may have mobility issues. Many have arthritis. They may not be able to bathe independently without help, so their feet may only get washed occasionally during the week. They can make a regular habit of simple foot wipe-downs with warm water, soap, and a washcloth outside of a shower.
  1. MOISTURIZE YOUR FEET!
Dry skin is prone to cracking, flaking, and breaking, so moisturizing is important for preventing open foot sores, especially for older adults whose skin is drier. You should apply foot lotions after your feet are thoroughly washed and dried. Make sure to dry in between your toes. Lotion will help lock in moisture and helps keep skin soft and supple.
  2. TRIM YOUR TOENAILS!
Keeping toenails trimmed is always important for foot care. If they get overgrown, it can cause pain or interfere with stable walking. Make sure you cut the nail straight across, and then use a nail file to soften sharp edges, so the nail doesn’t grow into the flesh. Seniors may have trouble cutting their nails but can find an experienced podiatrist who can offer their services.
