How to Prevent Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail can quickly become a very painful and debilitating experience that is best avoided since it may lead to possible infection and even amputation in those patients who have diabetes. Ingrown toenails usually start when a toenail is cut too short or when an injury occurs to the foot after dropping a heavy object on your toes.

While overly curved toenails and a propensity for developing toe problems can both be genetic, a variety of proactive methods can be employed to help mitigate your chances of developing an ingrown toenail.

Tips for preventing ingrown toenails include:

  • Correct toenail cutting technique—Cutting your toenails as straight across as possible with only a slight curve and a little on the long side will help avoid ingrowing.
  • Wearing properly-fitted shoes—Always wear shoes that are sized correctly and that provide ample room in the toe box while being supportive and comfortable. There should be a quarter inch of space between your longest toe and the front of your shoe to avoid rubbing and excess pressure that can force the edge of the nail to grow into the skin. Avoid wearing high heels since they really constrict your feet and cause a variety of foot and toe problems.
  • Daily foot inspection—It is always best to react to signs of an ingrown toenail early in the process to avoid bacterial or fungal toenail infections, not to mention continuing pain and discomfort.
