Foot surgery can feel like a big step, and it’s natural to wonder what recovery will be like. While every procedure is different, knowing what to expect during the first week after foot surgery can help you feel more prepared.
At Syracuse Podiatry, we guide patients through every stage of recovery, helping them heal safely and get back on their feet.
The First Few Days
The first 24 to 48 hours are focused on protecting the surgical site and managing discomfort. It’s common to experience:
Your podiatrist will provide instructions for pain medication, bandage care, and activity restrictions.
Keep Your Foot Elevated
During the first week, elevation is one of the best ways to reduce swelling and improve comfort. Keep your foot above heart level whenever possible and avoid sitting with your foot hanging down for extended periods. Depending on your procedure, a podiatrist may also recommend icing near the surgical area to help control swelling.
Follow Weight-Bearing Instructions
Some patients can walk in a surgical boot soon after surgery, while others need crutches or a knee scooter to avoid putting weight on the foot.
Even if you’re feeling better after a few days, avoid walking more than recommended. Putting weight on your foot too soon can slow healing and affect your surgical results.
Protect the Incision
Keeping the incision clean and dry helps reduce the risk of infection. During the first week:
- Leave dressings in place unless instructed otherwise.
- Keep the bandage dry.
- Watch for increasing redness, drainage, warmth, or fever, and contact your podiatrist if these symptoms occur.
Your First Follow-Up Appointment
Most patients return for a follow-up visit within the first week. Your podiatrist will examine the surgical site, monitor your healing, and explain the next phase of recovery.
Healing takes time, but following your post-operative instructions can make a significant difference in your outcome.
