Protect Your Child’s Feet This Summer!

The warm weather is finally here, and children are anxious to get outside and enjoy some summer fun. That means a lot of wear and tear on young feet. Check out these quick tips to keep your child’s feet safe and healthy this season.

WHAT ARE SOME CHILDRENS FOOT PROBLEMS?

Children are susceptible to many of the same problems adults have with their feet. Some of the most common include:

  • Blisters
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Fungal infection
  • Bunions
  • Heel pain

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Children’s foot care is best dealt with by a qualified specialist. Always consult your doctor first. There several easy things you can do right now to protect your child’s feet, including:

  • StretchingStretches can keep your child’s feet limber and flexible. Have your child practice forward or side lunges. Also, touching their toes can help. Just make sure to be careful not to stretch too much and cause strain.
  • Proper footwear – Because children’s feet are constantly growing, it’s important to check their shoe size continually. Tight shoes can be restrictive to small feet that are still forming. Make sure there’s plenty of room for their toes. If you’re at a pool, be sure your child wears flip-flops or sandals to prevent contracting fungal infections.
  • Custom orthoticsCustom orthotics aren’t just for adults. These are shoe inserts designed to fit the exact shape of your child’s feet. They provide the proper support where it’s needed most. Visit an experienced podiatrist for more information.

If you notice your child is walking funny or has a limp, it’s best to consult your doctor right away.
