5 Tips To Keep Feet Healthy for Men’s Health Month

June is Men’s Health Month.  It’s a great time to raise awareness about things we can do to protect men’s health. With summer here, men are getting outside to hike, run, play sports, and engage in various other outdoor activities. Unfortunately, all these activities can put a lot of strain on men’s feet. To make sure you have a healthy summer, here are 5 tips to keep your feet in perfect shape.

APPLY SUNSCREEN

People always apply sunscreen to their face and body, but it’s important not to forget your feet. Going barefoot exposes your feet directly to the sun. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) warns skin cancer of the foot is prevalent and should be taken seriously.

KEEP YOUR FEET MOISTURIZED

Many men don’t moisturize their feet, but dry and cracked feet can allow bacteria to enter and cause infection. Moisturizing regularly can also help with calluses. However, you shouldn’t moisturize in between your toes, as this can cause conditions for athlete’s foot or other infections to breed.

CHANGE YOUR SOCKS REGULARLY

Dirty and damp socks are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungus. Not only can this cause foot odor, but you can also contract athlete’s foot, a fungus that can cause pain and irritation.

WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES

Make sure your toes have plenty of wiggle room. Cramped shoes can cause bunions or toe deformities. If you have problems finding comfortable shoes, a podiatrist can prescribe custom orthotics. These are shoe inserts specially designed to the shape of your foot.

KEEP YOUR FEET DRY

In the hot weather, your feet can sweat. To prevent bacteria, make sure to dry your feet thoroughly, especially in between your toes. Powders can also be bought and applied to soak up any excess moisture.
