3 Causes of Heel Pain

There are many causes of heel pain and discomfort, and it is one of the most common reasons to see your foot doctor. Heel pain can be caused by poorly fitting shoes, repetitive stress, and bone spurs, to name a few issues. You don’t have to suffer from heel pain. Contact your foot doctor for relief.

3 common causes of heel pain may include the following:

  • Achilles tendon problems—the Achilles tendon is the thick tendon that connects your calf muscle to the back of your heel to allow you to move your foot. When this tendon becomes stressed and stretched due to overuse from hard work and sporting activities, it can cause a painful condition called Achilles tendonitis. In some cases, the tendon can actually break, which will cause intense pain and immobility and require surgery to repair.
  • Sever’s diseaseThis is a foot condition that primarily affects adolescents. It is characterized by a growth plate in the heel area that doesn’t keep up with the growth of the bone. The two growth patterns usually equalize as kids get older, but in severe cases, surgery may be needed.
  • Tarsal tunnel—This syndrome affects the foot is like the more common wrist condition called carpal tunnel syndrome. In both cases, nerve pinching and stress cause pain and discomfort that in some instances can radiate to the heel area.
