After more than 30 years of successful private group practice primarily in suburban Chicago, Dr. Kathleen Pyatak-Hugar has recently joined the staff at Syracuse Podiatry. A native from Syracuse, Dr. Pyatak has returned to the CNY area to be near family.
Following graduation from Cicero High School and obtaining her Bachelor of Science degree in Premedical Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Pyatak matriculated at the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, earning her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree in 1983. Upon completion of her multi-year foot and ankle surgical residency at St. Anne’s Hospitals (Chicago and Northlake, Illinois), she entered private group practice and was employed as an associate professor at the Scholl College in the Departments of Orthopedics and Surgery, specializing in podopediatrics, biomechanics, podiatric orthopedics, and foot and ankle surgery. Following her attainment of board certification in foot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS; now known as the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery/ABFAS), Dr. Pyatak was appointed as an oral examiner for the ABPS board certification examinations, as well as a member of its examinations committee, and was later elected to the Board of Directors, ultimately serving as its Board President.
Throughout her career, Dr. Pyatak has held multiple leadership roles serving the public and the profession as a member/chairman and liaison on various national, state and regional committees and boards of directors, including the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, the Joint Residency Review Committee, the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards, the American Association for Women Podiatrists, Division 6 of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons (founding member), the Illinois Podiatric Licensing Board, the Podiatry Residency Resource BOD, and for the past 8 years the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners where she is the current President. Dr. Pyatak served over 22 years as a national onsite reviewer of podiatric residencies, and continues to actively participate in the item-writing/review process for ABFAS and NBPME. She has a long history of experience training podiatric medical students and residents, as well as lecturing on national and local levels. With a continued strong interest in diabetic foot care, foot and ankle surgery/salvage surgery, pediatric foot care, biomechanics/orthotic control, and wound care, Dr. Pyatak has maintained active foot and ankle surgical privileges at many hospitals and surgery centers over the past years, and is looking forward to providing these services to Central New York patients.
Dr. Pyatak currently resides in the Radisson Community in Baldwinsville.
