3 Main Causes of Foot and Ankle Problems

Podiatrists like Dr. Ryan L. D’Amico of Syracuse Podiatry, located in Fayetteville, New York, have seen all types of foot and ankle problems enter their offices. Foot and ankle problems are not limited to the older generation; children, adolescents, middle aged men and women of all backgrounds come in to see the podiatrist because of their ailments. Our feet are one of the most commonly used body parts so they see a lot of mileage and trauma from day to day life. What causes the bulk of foot and ankle problems? There are three main things to watch out for when thinking about your foot and ankle health.

  1. Genetics – Although we cannot change our genetic makeup we can keep an eye on our bodies through regular examinations to prevent problems that our genetics can cause.  For example, those who have a history of high arches in their family are also more likely to have high arches. These high arches are prone to pain and should be treated with orthotics and other methods to prevent even further damage in the future. Another problem genetics can play a role in is diabetes. Those people with diabetes must take especially good care of their feet and ankles to prevent ulcers, infections, and other serious wounds.
  2. Biomechanics – Biomechanics is both the internal and the external forces of everyday life and how we use them to move and interact. Running, walking, jumping, and jogging are all types of biomechanics. These activities are often causing our feet and ankles a lot of havoc. Overuse injuries, sudden traumas, and blisters are all possible due to biomechanics. Be sure to use every safety precaution possible when partaking in athletic activities and other similar tasks to prevent further problems.
  3. Shoes – Shoes are one of the most common reasons for foot and ankle problems. That is because many people do not wear shoes that fit them properly. Shoes should not be restrictive, should have a lot of support and stability and also the ability to absorb shock. Heels, flats, boat shoes, and other similar shoes are bad for your feet and can cause spurs, plantar fasciitis and other more severe conditions.

Are you suffering from a foot or ankle injury due to poor shoes, an activity or just because of genetics? Do you need someone to help you diagnose that tingle or redness? Dr. D’Amico can help. Call 315-446-3668 or make an appointment online today to help alleviate that pain and suffering.
