4 Tips for Avoiding Injuries During Sports & Exercise

Some of the more common injuries suffered while playing sports and exercising include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and shin splints. While any sports or exercise program comes with the risk of injury, you can minimize the likelihood of having an injury with some straightforward tips.

4 tips to help avoid injuries while playing sports and exercising include the following:

  • Keep your body properly hydrated by drinking sufficient healthy fluids— Often, the cause of debilitating muscle cramps is due to poor hydration. Drink plenty of healthy fluids before, during, and after playing sports and exercising.
  • Wear properly fitted footwear and custom orthotic insertsAlways choose footwear appropriate for the activity. For instance, wearing running shoes to play a court sport is just asking for trouble. Properly fitted shoes and properly formed and placed orthotic inserts can treat and prevent many foot and ankle problems.
  • Do a proper warm-up and stretching exercises before strenuous activity—Perform various foot and leg exercises to warm up the Achilles tendon and calf muscle. After a vigorous workout, cooling down is equally important to help prevent injuries.
  • Start a new routine slowly—If you are just beginning a new sport or exercise routine, take it slowly at first until your body gets used to the new sources of stress and pressure. Going gung-ho right from the start is likely to cause an Achilles tendon injury or worse.
